A tablet is one of the devices that works best bought refurbished: it's mostly used at home, takes fewer knocks than a phone and models from a couple of years ago still have plenty in reserve. The key is to choose for how you'll use it.

iPad (9th generation): the simple choice

The best-selling iPad of recent years: a 10.2" display, A13 chip, Touch ID and all-day battery. Its design with bezels is dated, but it's perfect for watching content.

  • ✅ The most affordable iPad
  • ✅ Works with a keyboard and Apple Pencil (1st generation)
  • ➖ Lightning port
  • ➖ The 64 GB version falls short if you download a lot

iPad Air (5th generation): computer-class power

It has the M1 chip, the same as the 2020 MacBook Air. A 10.9" display, USB-C and support for the 2nd-generation Apple Pencil, which attaches magnetically and charges itself.

  • ✅ Plenty of power for drawing, editing or multitasking
  • ✅ Modern design and USB-C
  • ➖ More expensive than the iPad 9

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8: the Android alternative

An 11" 120 Hz display, S Pen included and storage you can expand with microSD. DeX mode brings it close to a computer experience.

  • ✅ Stylus included: you save on the accessory
  • ✅ Very smooth display
  • ➖ Fewer tablet-optimised apps than on iPad

What to check when it arrives

  1. Battery: use it for a normal day and see if it lasts. iPads don't show a health percentage like iPhones, so look at the real battery life.
  2. Display: look for patches or areas with uneven brightness.
  3. Previous owner's account: the tablet should arrive without Activation Lock.
  4. Touch across the whole screen: draw or drag icons all over it.

If you have questions about the warranty, we explain it in warranty and returns.

Verdict

  • For most people: iPad (9th generation). Simple, reliable and cheap.
  • For studying with a stylus or drawing: iPad Air (5th generation).
  • If you prefer Android: Galaxy Tab S8, with the S Pen thrown in.
